Of course this question comes up on a weekend when I can't get hold of my rheumatologist or pcp.  I am sick with an upper respiratory and sinus infection for which I am taking Augmentin (antibiotic) and Mucinex (expectorant).  I have been taking the antibiotic since Wednesday morning and today, my fever has finally dropped to 99 degrees.  (It had been running 101).  Anyway, I usually take my weekly mtx before bed on Saturday.  My question is, would it be better to take it or not.  I vaguely seem to remember reading that you should not take it if you are sick with anything more than a cold.  This is the first time that I have run into this since being on mtx, so I would really appreciate any advise or info!

Thanks, Pam

Pam I'm not a doctor, so please take this for what it's worth. I've taken MTX for the last 2 + years, and I've been told by my Rheumy to stop taking MTX ,if I am on an antibiotic, and or running a fever.

And that's what I usually do, however if I'm  not on antibiotics but can't seem to shake a chronic cold , I'll skip a week or so of MTX without consulting anyone, just so my body can get back to "normal"(whatever that is for "us" ) Doesn't happen very often.

If you still feel nervous about not taking the MTX , call your Pharamacist tomorrow (one day or even two days later is not going to matter)and ask his opinon, or wait til Mon. and call or pcp.

hope this helps,

Rosanne

Thanks Rosanne.  I appreciate your reply.  When I am sick I start questioning what I think I know and it helps to hear from someone who has been there.  I will hold off on the mtx and call my rheumatologist on Monday.  Have a good weekend.

That is a good idea.  Do not take the mtx, I had a cut on my leg this past Nov. that turned into an infecton.  I had to stay off my mtx and enbrel till further notice which was about 2 weeks.. I now have another infection and will not be able to take it for ar least a month.  Your body's immune system is already down, the mtx will only bring it down even fruther.  Hope you feel better soon.  Meme
