Topic: fish oil? Posted: 13 October 2011 at 1:52am |
What type of fish oil have you found helpful? I found a recommendation for 2000-3000 mg fish oil in The Inflammation Free Diet Plan by Moncia Reinagel but when I went to pick up some the array of available products was confusing. I do try to eat wild coho salmon 3 times a week but getting some throughout the year regularly is a challenge where I live. According to this book farm raised salmon does more harm than good. Tips and suggestions please .Thank you Lucky Canuk

Hello Luckycauk
I haven't taken any fish oil supplements as such but have incorporated oily fish into my diet regularly since PMR/GCA diagnosis and commencing on very high dose steroids 4+ years ago. I believed that these foods would help both as an anti-inflammatory and to counteract bone loss due to steroids. These include salmon (always wild not farmed), mackerel and sardines (the latter with bones - good for our bones!). I have just read an article which advised switching sardines to pilchards during the winter months when we aren't getting the Vit D from the sun - apparently pilchards contain a much higher level of Vit D which can help with our bone density.
During the early days of my high dose steroid treatment (commencing 40mgs and with no calcium supplementation) my bone density went from normal to osteopenia of the spine, hips normal. However, 2 years later, having been on much lower doses, the DEXA scan still shows osteopenia and has thankfully not progressed to osteoporosis. I am inclined to put this down to my diet and to my daily walking, especially as most of my friends of the same age (approaching 70) are systematically all being diagnosed with osteoporosis - none of them has taken steroids!
Keep well!

Omega 3, or old fashioned Cod Liver Oil.
And you are right about farmed Salmon.
There are other oily fish and one is Mackeral, which are not as pricey as Salmon in the UK and are available all year round.
Hope this helps.

You are your friends should ask to be tested for Vit D deficiency.
All of us, who live north of Tuscany are liable to have this deficiency and it is more prevalent in young children and people over 60.
Calichew won't do it, if you are suffering from it, you need Dekristol, pure Vit D to build up the level to the norm, the the calichew will help. Vit D deficiency causes aches and pains, which mimic PMR.

Hi mrs UK
My Vit D was 54 when tested - it was the end of last winter so I think my GP felt that it would be higher during the summer as he told me it was normal. However, when getting the receptionist to repeat the reading to me over the phone, she read "borderline deficiency 54"! Would love to get another test now after the summer but he wasn't very happy that I'd had one done at all, saying "Who arranged this - I don't do them"? I had cajoled a new young Dr into doing it! Not advisable for me to take calcium supplements - could aggravate my CKD3 (reduced kidney function).

Yes, he would say 'who arranged this' as it costs the practice more for that sort of test, so I am given to understand.
Look at the BSR guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of PMR - in the diagnosis part, Vit D should be tested and is used as an exclusion test as the aches and pains caused by this deficiency can be mistaken for PMR, they are so alike.
How do I know, read the Vit D story in the Newsletter Nov 2011 posted on our website.
www.pmr-gca-northeast-co.uk and push for another test - borderline - means you could be getting additional aches and pains to the PMR aches and pains because of Vit D deficiency.
Print them out if necessary and waive it at your GP or change your GP
Celtic have you visited pmrandgca.forumup.co.uk?

I've just posted a reply to mrs UK but it hasn't appeared - I'm having problems with this site today. Your message that appeared has also now disappeared on my screen but hopefully this reply will appear as I just wanted to say what good news from you on all fronts and lots of good luck wishes for success at 16mgs.

Blame it on the steroid brain fog, no that is not true, I just clean forgot about Celtic, but remembered about the Pearl.grrrrr
But I do have an excuse, I am desparately trying to proof read the Newsletter, making apple jelly, crab apple jelly and soup, soup and more soup. Glut of veggies and enough veg frozen that can be frozen so pans and pans of soup. In the next two days the freezer will be full.
Oh and I was offered some green tomatoes this morning - I politely refused - could not cope with chutney as well.

Not fried at the whistle stop cafe I hope - what a great film! And if I thought it was good it must have been something!
