What is Enbrel used for?
Enbrel was approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis joint pain, as well as other symptoms. Also being pushed for the treatment of Ankylosing spondylitis, Psoriatic arthritis, and Psoriasis
Why was Enbrel Recalled (or why should it be) ?
Enbrel was on the market for only five months when reports of thirty patients treated with the drug developed serious infections including sepsis.
On May 12, 1999 the FDA announced a new warning would be put on the popular arthritis drug’s label. When the label was issued there had already been 25,000 patients treated and six of these patients died within two to 16 weeks after beginning Enbrel.
Multiple sclerosis and other central nervous system disorders have been observed in association with Enbrel and medications that target TNF-alpha. There have been reports of the worsening of congestive heart failure, as well as rare reports of new cases of congestive heart failure.
