Ringing in my ears | Arthritis Information

It doesn't seem to have a pattern, but I have ringing in my ears a lot. Does anyone else have this? Have you pinpointed the cause? Thanks, LyndaIt sounds like tinitus. My mum suffers with it, hers came on after a bang on the head but it can start for various reasons. I would see your doctor just incase. It might just be an inner ear problem

Yes! During my very first dose of Remicade a year and a half ago, I noticed a subtle ringing in my ears about 15 minutes into the infusion. MY RD was concerned, but let me finish the infusion. Second dose, same thing happened, and he sent me to an ENT for evaluation. The ENT couldn't say for sure if it was a side effect of the Remicade, so my RD, ENT, and I decided we would just watch it for a while. After about the 3rd or 4th dose, the ringing (tinnitis) never went away, and my ears had a mild ringing all the time.

I stayed on Remicade a little over a year, and the tinnitis continued to get worse, so my RD switched me over to Rituxan. Unfortunately, the Rituxan did nothing for me, so we decided once again to try Remicade...I had been off Remicade for about 6 months, and although the ringing got better, it never entirely went away.

I've now had one Remicade infusion, and the same thing happened. About 15 minutes into the infusion, my ears started ringing even louder, and have remained that way...I'm currently 4 weeks post infusion. There is now no doubt in my mind that it is related to the Remicade. I have an appointment with my RD on Tuesday, and I'm sure he's going to take me off of it, as he has been afraid all along of ototoxicity and hearing loss. Not sure yet what the next step will be, but he did mention Orencia if the Remicade and tinnitis became a problem.

I hope this isn't the case with you, but with you being on 900 mg of Remicade, one has to wonder...

One more thing...you didn't mention if you are taking any NSAIDS, but NSAID use can also cause tinnitis.I cant remember what thread this was on but many peple reported ringing in the ears with remicade. I'd ask the doctor if this is a side effect. Methotrexate keeps coming up with the 'ringing in the ears' , I took it on Friday! LyndaMy ears ring most all the time and have for a couple of years.  None of the drs seem to think its an issue but it drives me nuts, especially when I am trying to fall alseep.

I have had tinnitus on-and-off for about a year.  I've been on NSAIDs a lot longer than that, but now I'm on so many different meds that I'm sure more than one of them contribute to the problem.

I've been fortunate that so far it hasn't lasted for more than a week at a time.  Tinnitus can be a devastating disease (a family friend has attempted suicide over it) and they don't seem to have effective treatment for it.  The only real promising solution I've seen, if you have a severe case, is to get hearing-aid like devices that emit a certain frequency of noise, which masks the sound you're hearing (they calibrate it specifically to each person).  Hopefully none of us will get that far.

Yes - I was on rather high doses of clinerol that cause ringng in my ears. When I reduced the dose it went away. Thank the Lord!

Hi all, Well I went to my gp and he 'cleaned out my ears' and said I have 'tissue' in my ear cannal. He cleared out some but said I'd have to go to an eye, nose and throat guy to go deeper. The ringing decreased right after he did the cleaning, but it is still there.

I suspect methotrexate, I'll wait until tomorrow (when I'm suppose to take my weekly dose) and see if it gets worse. Whattya think???

Lynda

Wow, that's interesting about the tissue in your ear canal.  Hopefully that's it and the ringing won't come back with the mtx, but guess you'll have to wait and see.

I suffer from tinitus with inner ear autoimmune disease for about 1 year now. They did 4 steroid injections to the inner ear, this is the only way to try to save your hear as you slowly lose your hearing. They make an incision to inject the steroid in the inner ear(painful). The incision never healed only got bigger, and never recovered any hearing-I can't hear any low tones in left ear,and now high tones are going. They operate end of July to put a patch of skin over the hole-dr. says they have discussed if this were to ever happen-but they has not been any cases.Lucky me .I have been on Remicade for a year,It's interesting to hear there are others that have the ringing. It is hard to be in crowded places. Tinnitus is commonly caused by nsaids. My ears ring all the time now. I have not been off nsaids in for more than a few weeks at a time in 30 years. I won't stay on an nsaid that increases the ringing. I did notice that the ringing has been softer the last 2 months. I quit Remicade in Dec...makes me wonder if it had made my problem worse.

It is the MOST annoying when I'm trying to fall asleep - sounds like my bedroom is filled with mosquitos.

If anybody finds a cure  - let me know. I'd be most grateful.Tinnitus is also a symptom of fibromyalgia. My ringing comes and goes with different fibro flares. Am also on MTX so could be that too. Who knows?.. The ringing pretty much stopped today, so I'm taking my methotrexate (but only 1/2 of the dose or 10mgs) and will see if the ringing gets worse if not, I'll take the rest tomorrow....I need these meds. Lynda

Hurts I really don't have any words of wisdom here.  I just wanted to stop by and let you know I am thinking about you and hope you feel better soon.  You've been doing so well and I hope you continue to do so.  These side effects are so endless it's ridiculous.  Let us know what happens when you take the MTX and if you are able to take the other half.

Peace & Love...Neasy

My brother had tinnitis a long time and then got up one morning to discover he was nerve deaf. Not to worry you but I would ask about it. I have some hearing issues as well due to nerve inflammation (? not sure I have that completely right) Since being on meds they have gone completely away.

My docs all pretty much blow me off about tinittis.

My Rhuemy has become really leery of nsaids... They cause more hospitalations than any other drug, so he is ultra careful and will stop or decrease nsaid dose at any complaint. That is something I can't handle .. and NO NO NO pain pills do not take the place of an nsaid.

I'd like to put him in my shoes for a couple of weeks without an nsaid and then a couple of weeks on one that works well. Too bad we can't actually have them feel what we feel.
